I've never tried transferring from my phone since downloading from the website is easier. You don't get a choice in the format, but the vast majority should be epubs. You can download acsm files directly off the Kobo website, open them with adobe digital editions on your computer, strip the DRM with calibre DeDRM, then use the file wherever.
